John Murn

John is one of the most experienced education lawyers in Australia. He was for many years the Chief Legal Officer at the NSW Department of Education, managing a team of around 25 including 15 lawyers. The Department is one of the largest organisations in Australia with over a million students at schools and TAFE colleges and close to 100,000 full-time equivalent employees.

Major areas of John’s work are:

• Employment law
• Discrimination law
• Privacy
• Civil liability
• Commercial law
• School attendance proceedings.

John is:

• a contributor (over many years) to the community based HSC Japanese Committee and is currently Vice President,
• working with AusAID Education Resource Facility to review the suite of education legislation in Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides) and draft replacement legislation where necessary.

John has previously been:

• a committee member of the New South Wales chapter of the Australia and New Zealand Education Law Association (ANZELA),
• a member of the Government Lawyers Committee of the Law Society.
